Cleaning Up Elm Park

On Sunday I joined volunteers along with local councillors Barry Oddy and John Wood, for a litter picking session in Elm Park. The morning was supervised by Cllr Barry Tebbutt, cabinet member for highways, and the Leader of the council Michael White also came along to lend a hand.

We planted new flower beds outside the station and cleared up a huge pile of beer cans and bottles which people had thoughtlessly thrown over a fence onto waste land.

The day was a great success and built on the volunteering spirit fostered by the Olympics. This is a version of the Big Society that everyone can get behind. The exercise will be repeated in other town centres in Havering.

Roger, very well done for tidying up Elm Park. This just goes to show to all the cynics out there that 'our' conservative boys are NOT posh boys and CAN get their hands dirty!!

Fabulous: it really is heartwarming to see that community service can have a positive effect on the lives of those who, shall we say, exist on the outer margins of society, and need to learn how to put in a good day's work, and not scrounge off the rest of us. I hope that you and your fellow Tories did not feel too stigmatised by your hi-vi vests, and have learnt a useful lesson ...

Sounds to me, Mrs Angry, as though you are making a case for your own participation in something similar.

Mrs Angry is an upstanding member of the community, Mr Hickey, and not an over paid and underworked Tory Assembly Member, but makes a positive contribution to society via the medium of blogging ... She does not wear vests, hi vi, or thermal.

I tremble in fear, Mrs Angry! But it is is not just the Tory AMs who are overpaid and underworked. All the AMs are. But there you are - it has to beat having a real job.
