Royalty In Havering

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee tour has missed Havering but we have the next best thing - a Royalty In Havering exhibition at the Havering Museum in Romford Town Centre. This morning I visited the museum to hand over a painting of the old Royal Palace at Havering-Atte-Bower. The painting was presented to Boris when he unveiled the new village sign several years ago and it depicts the palace as it would have been at its construction, painstakingly recreated from the original plans and drawings by artist Susanna Small. The picture is on loan to the museum as the centrepiece of their exhibition which runs from 14 April to 23 June. In the photograph I am joined by museum volunteer Matthew Abel, who found out about the painting from this very blog! With just 29 days to the elections I kept myself out of the stocks on this visit...

You are the next best thing to royalty in Havering, of course, Roger. I am disapppointed, though: I was waiting for your post on the royal visit to Redbridge - weren't you invited? Seems a bit mean. The Queen gave Barnet the cold shoulder too, understandable, probably trying to avoid You Know Who. Shame, because we paid £1,000 for a jubilee anthem, on the off chance of a visit.

The reference to Havering palace is intriguing, actually: I'd never heard of it but have now looked it up - very interesting. Perhaps you should do more local history in the blog, better than all the political stuff ...

Mrs A, I assume my invitation is still in the post. The Royal Mail was never the same after I left...

Just as well really - I had a load of campaigning to do. Only 26 days to go now.

Oh: were you a postman? Did you have a black and white cat?
Yes, the run down to the election is going very quickly now. Glad to hear you have been busy campaigning and ( jumping ahead to the next post) joining in the hustings. Sadly our Tory candidate will not take part in any. Can't imagine why. In fact I think voters respect candidates who have the guts to take part in public debate: live discussions can be dangerous, but are an essential part of the democratic process. Except here in Barnet,of course. See, it was all going so well, and I had to upset Sonia all over again.

A bit classier than that Mrs A - I had a Siamese with pointy ears and big blue eyes! Sadly she came to grief on a busy road...

If you feel you are missing out hustings wise, feel free to visit Barkingside 21 and watch their video. But of course you had Brian and Boris at a public meeting quite recently so I don't think you've been short changed.

Nice to see you from the front at last, thanks to Citizen Barnet. You aren't at all like I had imagined...
